Longtime musician Barry Cowsill will appear in district court next week answering charges he made several "crank or obscene" phone calls in recent weeks, according to Newport police Lt. Michael Brennan.
After investigating a complaint from former U.S. Rep. Fernand St. Germain, D-R.I., local police Wednesday issued a summons to Cowsill, who lives in Newport.
Barry Cowsill is the original bassist for The Cowsills, a group of brothers and sisters that gained national fame in the late 1960s and '70s with songs such as "Hair" and "The Rain, The Park And Other Things."
St. Germain, 77, told police earlier in the week that Cowsill had left about 10 "rambling (phone) messages" at his home in recent weeks.
The police learned that Cowsill had been dating St. Germain's 41-year-old daughter - who listed her father's Newport home as her address - for more than a year. They broke up in the fall according to Brennan.
"(St. Germain) filed a complaint that the calls are annoying and they're late at night into the early morning hours," Brennan said. "No threats were made."
The Cowsills sung the national anthem at Boston's Fenway Park before Game 4 of the American League Nation Series in October.
