Cowsills' Family Amusement Grew Into Top Soft-Rock Act
October 20 1971

The Cowsills began their career at home as a family amusement. Like the seven dwarfs, they whistled – and sang – while they worked. And work they did. Father Bud Cowsill was away from home most of the time, a member of the Navy, finally retiring after a 20 year hitch.

During that period, mother Barbara had her hands full with seven children to raise in a rather neglected 22-room mansion with the almost ghostly name of “Halidon Hall,” situated in the suburbs of Newport, R.I. It all sounds a bit Dickenish but that’s how, and where, it began. From a simple, family amusement to one of today’s top concert soft-rock attractions.

At this time five of her seven children and mom (Barbara Cowsill) are in the group, which’ll be appearing at Memorial Hall on Friday, Nov. 12, for an 8 p.m. performance.

Incidentally, The Cowsills moved from “Halidon Hall” to a new home in Santa Monice, Calif., where they still do the All-American thing – football played on the spacious law, hot dogs on the grill, cokes in the frig and dunkings in the pool.

The Cowsills are an amazing – and entertaining – family . . .
