"Booked primarily for youth" went the Blossom publicity, and sure enough, B. J. Thomas and the Cowsills drew a medium-sized youthful crowd of 3966.

. . .

First thing first. The Cowsills started the program with their own particular brand of droopy sentimentality and, to give them credit, built up toward a solid rock performance by three boys and sister Susan.

Mom came on several times and things slowed down to a kind of county-and-suburban (an offshoot of country-and-western) and then the kids would send her packing while they attended to THEIR kind of music.

Older brother Paul has gone off to the Navy, and he is missed. The patter between songs in other years was not quite so inane as it was last night. There is nothing unfunnier than unfunny musicians trying to be funny.

. . .

While the sound system seemed to favor him (B.J) and his type of song, it was simply too loud and overwhelming for the Cowsills. I for one had an extremely difficult time understanding their words - even in "Indian Lake," of all things.
