Instead of writing about hit records, I'm going to write about a man who helps make hit records. That man is Louis Newman, until today Cleveland promotion manager for Liberty Records. He will start a new job Monday. Liberty promoted him to district record promotions manager in Hollywood.
. . .
Main Line officials were so pleased, they awarded Newman the MGM line to promote. The first thing he did when he got that line was to throw one of the biggest record promotion parties ever held in Ceveland. The party was for another "unknown" group then called The Cowsills.
Until the party, Newman was having difficulty getting air play for the group's first record, "The Rain, the Park and Other Things". He saw the family perform live and figured if the radio music directors saw them they would go with the record. So, he invited music directors from nearly all the stations in Ohio, Buffalo and Pittsburgh to the party.
Newman's figuring was right on target. Newspapermen at the party wrote rave reviews on the Cowsills, and the radio stations started giving the group's record deserved air play. "The Rain, the Park and Other Things" was also a million seller.
