The Cowsills, a nationally-known family singing group, will present two concerts at the Vigo County Fair, Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
This marks the first time in several years that a big name group has been brought to the fair, and fair officials say there already has been good response to the announcement the top notch group will perform here.
The Cowsill kids perform - with mom and dad doing their part in the background. They present a good, tight, smooth-running act.
Tickets are going on sale this week at Bachrack's Men's Wear, Barrett Handbags, Orange Julius, and the Regal Shoe Store all in Honey Creek Square.
Ed Jukes, a member of the executive board of the Wabash Valley Fair Association, Inc., reports there will be 1,100 choice reserved seats for each concert, plus a vast number of non-reserved seats.
The 1,100 reserved seats will be located on the track in front of the state at the fairgrounds. Jukes said he believes the choice seats on the track will give the audience a real close-up of the Cowsills in Concert.
"This is the first time we've set up seats that close to the stage, but we think it will be tremendous for the audience," Jukes said.
A plastic cover will be placed on the track and the chairs will be placed on that cover.
"People who want to get the reserved choice seats on the track should try to get their tickets early," Jukes said. We'll have only 1,100 of those seats for each performance." But Jukes reiterated the point that there should be plenty of non-reserved seats in the grandstand.
The choice reserved seats will cost $4, while non-reserved seats will cost $2.
Veterans of several appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, they also have recorded several hit records. At present, the Cowsills are working on their eighth record album. Their first big hit was "The Rain, The Park, and Other Things," which triggered a promotional trip throughout the country. Then they came up with another big hit, "We Can Fly." That brought the contract with Ed Sullivan for 10 guest appearances.
The father of the Cowsills is Bud, who is general manager and sound man. The group has its own sound system, presided over by Bud, who sets the levels and makes sure everything is working before a performance.
"Mom" is Barbara, who stands in the wings and helps boost all her kids as they do their thing in the act.
Bill Cowsill, who along with brother Bob began performing in 1958, left the group to become an independent record producer. Bob has gone off in a different direction and now writes the group's music as well as remaining an active performer.
The group presently is composed of Bob, 20; Paul, 18; Barry, 15; John, 14, and Susan, 11.
Bob began playing guitar when he was seven. Barry started of playing the bongo drums, but later switched to bass guitar and tutored younger brother, John, on the bongos. John is an outstanding drummer in the group.
