On The Floor of Heaven – Blue Shadows, Sony Music
???? (out of five)
‘Been down so long it looks like up to me’ might be the sub-title to Billy Cowsill’s new album.
With his three brothers, Billy formed The Cowsills in 1965 and went on to platinum success with their single, Hair.
But Bill soured on the schmaltz and dropped out, even turning down an offer to join the Beach Boys.
He bought a bar in Austin, Texas and drank it into the ground, lost his wife and after a stint in Vancouver with Blue Northern, eventually would up at Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous.
Several years back he formed The Blue Shadows and began working Vancouver pubs as a duo with Jeffrey Hatcher.
It is now a four-piece with Cowsill and Hatcher singing music that they call Hank goes to the Cavern Club.
Hank Williams, The Beatles, Roy Orbison, The Everleys, Johnny Cash and J J Cale are all gazing at Billy and The Blue Shadows as they harmonize at the moon.
On the Floor Of Heaven is gut-wrenchingly unfettered Okie cowpunk that will win fans with its true-blue honesty.
