Red Sox sultan Tom Werner and his ``Today'' show cutie Katie Couric have struck out worse than Mark Bellhorn, sources told the Track yesterday.

Couric, a fixture at Fenway Park during the regular season, was noticeably MIA at last night's Sox-Yankees ALCS showdown, fueling recent reports that the couple were Splitsville.

``Ultimately they realized they weren't right for each other,'' said an F.O.K. ``They had a lot of fun and there's no hard feelings.''

In fact, Werner told CBS4's Josh Binswanger yesterday that he's ``still crazy about her,'' but added he's more ``focused on baseball'' than his love life right now.

Who does he think he is? Pedro???

Anyway, last week after People reported the TV power couple's relationship was on the skids, word from La-La was that Tom, who finally shed his wife of 28 years after a long, nasty divorce, was commitmentphobic and Katie wanted the ring. And then there was the whole bi-coastal relationship thing.

``This had nothing to do with marriage,'' said Couric's pal.

A source told People that the big-time Hollywood TV producer and the Peacock's perky morning gal ``traveled together, went everywhere together.'' But that the love affair ``ran its course.''

Of course, some Tom and Katie watchers believe that the bust-up is just a ploy by Katie to put pressure on Werner to cough up the rock.

``I think they're going to be OK,'' said one friend of the couple.

So, as always, do stay tuned.

Playing up the past

Things got downright Hair-y at Fenway Park last night when The Cowsills, the '60s band from Newport, R.I., belted out their big hippie-dippie hit for Fenway's (Folically) Faithful.

Bob Cowsill, along with sibs Richard, Barry, Susie and Paul, reunited for the third time in 35 years to belt out ``Hair'' in homage to Johnny, Manny, Pedro, Bronson, et. al. as well as their late mum, Barbara.

``My mother loooooved the Red Sox,'' said Bob. ``I remember her ironing in front of the old black-and-white TV with curlers in her hair watching - and rooting for - the Red Sox. And I believe she's here with us tonight.''

Hey, with curlers in her long, beautiful Hair? There's no question Mama Cowsill was in da house last night!

``Johnny Damon could definitely have been in our band in the '60s,'' said Barry, whose singing family was the inspiration for TV's ``Partridge Family.''

Bob Cowsill scored the Fenway gig for the family about a month ago when Red Sox PR prince Charles Steinberg - and producer of the team's ``Hair'' video - found him singing for his supper at the Fox & Hounds in Hollywood.

``He's become like a god to me,'' Cowsill crooned. ``I didn't know his name, I didn't know his role, that's all I know is he worked for the Red Sox.''

As for his sis, Susie, ``He had me at Red Sox.''

Here baby, there mama, everywhere daddy daddy, Hair!
