“When Billy Cowsill tells you he likes your voice – it means something,” says Randy Hutchings, recalling what it felt like when the late Calgary musician agreed to record a song with him two years ago.
The track, titles Leave, is featured as a bonus song on Hutchings’ new album, Atlantic Avenue which was released in June.
After Cowsill’s death, Hutchings was not unsure about including the duet on the album.
“I didn’t want to make it the focus of the CD, I just wanted to add it as a bonus track because I really loved that song and what he did with it when he was singing with me,” says Hutchings.
“At the same time I didn’t want people to think I was adding it to the CD in an opportunist way. I asked people who knew him well if they thought I should include the song and they said ‘yes, if Billy was alive he would have told you to put it on there’.”
Hutchings says he met Cowsill a few years ago and they immediately hit it off.
“I asked him if he would be interested in recording with me and he said yes,” says Hutchings.
“He said he really liked my voice.”
Cowsill, who suffered from a series of health problems before his death, was known to be choosy about who he would work with musically. The collaboration with Hutchings was an evident honour for the Calgary-based folk singer-songwriter.
In February, several months before the release of Atlantic Avenue, Cowsill died from a combination of health problems.
Cowsill was a rock ‘n’ roll veteran, a member of Calgary band, the Co-Dependents and world famous pop group The Cowsills – a band who’s ‘60s hits include; The Rain, The Park & Other Things, and Indian Lake.
