The tourists might not know it, but at this time of year, there are two Calgary Stampedes.
There’s the Stampede with the parade and the grandstand show, the rodeo and the rides on the fairground, the mainstream music stars and the Stampede breakfasts.
Then there is the underground Stampede that’s grown up in the shadow of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
This year, the underground whoop-up scene is stronger than ever, with a number of venues providing their own rootsy alternative to the glitzy, heavily commercial tourist attraction that is Stampede.
Soren Borch put together one such event, the Birkenstomp Rodeo, which will be held July 9 at Jimmy’s, in Calgary’s northeast. The event features the traditional country music of such popular Alberta acts as The Co-Dependents, Tom Phillips & The Men of Constant Sorrow and the Corb Lund Band.
