Billy Cowsill’s last known musical contributions can be heard on a gritty new countrified set called Rivers & Rails: A Tribute to Alberta. The late great co-wrote and plays acoustic guitar on the title track, and harmonies on Stuart MacDougals’s prairie-wise “That Days I’m With The Horses.” His presence is sweet to be sure, but the Cowsill factor threatens to over shadow the other talents – not to mention the testicular fortitude of the man who compiled and assigned 26 southern Alberta musicians to independently write and perform a semi-biographical provincial back story, and with scant help from a label, distributor or investor.
Fueling the little train that could for three years, from start to finish, was Ralph Boyd Johnson, Cowsill’s longtime friend, former housemate and fellow roots-rocker on the title track.
