Hank Williams Re-Examined
As a tribute to the great Hank Williams, this double disc featuring some of Alberta’s finest roots musicians is about as well-rounded as it gets.
On one disc the stars of the show, Tim Williams, Tom Phillips, Stewart MacDougall, Jane Hawley and the late Billy Cowsill work their considerable magic doing faithful renditions of the country music legend’s greatest songs.
Each of these artists put their seasoned stamp on the tunes, most powerfully Cowsill, who captures the hillbilly sorrow inherent in Hank’s songs like a man who truly felt each classic line deep in his heart. And if Cowsill sings it like he means it, then Charlie Veilleux, pedal steel guitarist for Tom Phillips plays it the same way. His lines on Cold, Cold Heart are haunting, lyrical and entirely penetrating.
