Meeting the popular Cowsills backstage at Music Hall Sunday was hectic but fun for Teen-Ager scribes Cathy Hultquist and Ed Schafer. Between them, they managed to talk to most of the family members and came away with the following tidbits of information:
Although the Cowsills have been singing together for more than six years, they only started recording in 1967
They travel about 50% of the time, and only go to school (a professional one, like actors) when they are home
Actually they have two homes, one in Newport, Rhode Island Hills and another in Santa Monica, California.
At first, Papa Cowsill wrote most of their songs. Now Paul, Barry, Bill Jr. and Bob do.
Practically all of their song writing is done in such off-beat places as airplanes, or backstage during concert intermissions.
They don’t think much of today’s pop music. Paul even confessed he never listens to AM radio because the music is so bad!
Their plans of the next six months include concert tours in England and Africa, five or six new albums, and changing their style to fit the changing trends in music!
Cathy and Ed agreed they Cowsills’ performance here was memorable. They were surprised to see that most of them can play each others’ instruments, and over-whelmed by little Susan’s talent. (she’s only 10, you know). Cathy’s favorite part of the concert was Barry’s impersonation of Mick Jagger complete with long pink underwear and an Uncle Sam hat.
“Either off stage or on, you could tell the family is really close-knit,” she said. “They weren’t conceited at all, and treated Ed and I like old friends.”
Ed found Mama (Barbara) Cowsill especially talkative and spent most of his time with her. She admitted their family life is much different now than it was years ago when Papa went off to sea. Now they all go what family could ask for more!
