A relatively small but incredibly vocal crowd of rock fans converged on Music Hall yesterday afternoon to swing along wo the Cowsills, a family group made up of six members, doing mainly a vocal/rock thing.

The crowd was young – very young; about five years younger on the average than the usual concert crowd. Symptomatic of the age group, fans wailed, squealed, shrieked, flailed arms and now and then stormed the stage.

While this went on, a line of the center aisle at Music Hall formed three deep with people popping flash bulbs.

Undaunted, the six members, mother, and daughter and four sons, sang one, now and then stopping to chat with the audience, keeping them primed up.

A large part of the two hour show was dedicated to some well-established oldies. Songs like “Monday, Monday,” “You Were On My Mind,” “Hey, Jude,” “Honky Tonk Woman,” and “Red Roses For a Blue Lady, “ provided for a familiar base.

But it was the group’s own hits that everyone came to hear. “Hair,” “Indian lake,” “Silver Threads and Golden Needles,” and “Singing in The Rain” nearly brought the ceiling down.

Something should definitely be said for the group’s versatility. Nearly every member is capable of playing one other instrument besides his own. Through all this switching off, there is no appreciable loss of their sound. It’s kind of nice the way they play everything.

The group should also get some kind of award for being able to go on so well in the face of almost unbelievable distractions – things like flash bulbs, people through love notes, cards and gifts. They held up well in the face of all that.

The masses were super wound up yesterday. Their adrenaline was gushing away and they made chaos.

The fans loved every minute of it. And that made the Cowsills happy too. So I guess it was a good show.
