Calgary acts shine in '04

Sometimes you have to wonder what you need to do to get noticed -- public drunken nudity aside.

Calgary's local music scene, for example, had a banner year this year, producing music that was incredible in both its quality and quantity.

But the only real thing we had to show for it was a major label release from Out of Your Mouth and the annual MuchMusic pilgrimage here in February.

Even this fall's Western Canadian Music Awards -- which the city hosted -- were less about spotlighting local talent than they were about sucking up to established stars in exchange for validation.

In fact, the number of Calgary artists and albums nominated was pitiful considering what was released in 2004 alone.

Some notable locals dropping discs this year included: The Bent Spoon Ensemble, The Mood, The Du-Rite Aces, Dave McCann and the Ten Toed Frogs, Fake Cops, The Fates, Tom Phillips, Tim Hus, Phattoe, Strugglah, Jon Delerious, Supernal, Glennis Houston, The Neckers, Cripple Creek Fairies, Bill Dowey, Palm and Sago, Warehouse, Sillan & Young, Vailhalen, Impirical, Roly Sandoval, Beautiful Joe, Billy Cowsill, Guerrilla Funk Monster, Internal Affairs, John Wort Hannam and Steve Coffey and the Lokels.

As for the cream that rose to the top, here's the Top 3 from the local scene that deserve to be heard here, there and everywhere.
