NEWPORT — At least the music felt like summer. For nearly two hours Sunday night, the Beach Boys ran through hit after summertime hit during a free concert at Naval Station Newport, summoning up nearly every surf song they ever recorded as well as some rarities and covers.

Other band members include drummer/singer and Newport native John Cowsill and Love’s son Christian on guitar and vocals, as well as guitarist/singer Scott Totten. As you might expect, the group’s strength is its harmonies. And it has a very strong catalog from which to draw.

The Beach Boys zoomed through all their surf hits early on, knocking out seven tunes in 20 minutes. The group members trade off vocals throughout a set, and Cowsill — of the Newport-based ’60s family musical group the Cowsills — was strong on “Darlin’” and the overlooked “Sail on Sailor.”
