Even Mother Sings With The Cowsills

Buena Park - Asking your mother to join your pop music singing group can be considered odd.

But this is just one of the unusual things about the Cowsills, the family music group which will open Knott's Berry Farm's star studded weekend of entertainment.

The Cowsills will be in Knotts' John Wayne Theater Friday night, Nov 5, followed by county music super star Webb Pierce Saturday evening and honky-tonk piano player Jo Ann Castle Sunday afternoon.

The Cowsills are the teen-age children of a U.S. Navy lieutenant who began their show business career at home as a family amusement.

As musicians the family gained in stature by moving from home to playing for high school functions, then college dances and up to local (Newport, Rhode Island) night spots.

The five obviously talended Cowsill boys had the opportunity to make a demonstration record which a friend would present to MGM records.

But before the boys would make the demo, they insisted on adding a female voice to their group - and promptly enlisted their mother.

The demo was a success. It turned out to be their first million-selling smash single, "The Rain, The Park And Other Things." Other big hits for the family group - which now includes their sister in addition to mom and the boys - have been "We Can Fly," "Indian Lake" and "Hair."
