Up until now, 16-year-old Paul Mitchell Cowsill has kept quietly out of the limelight by taking the job of road manager for the group, together with brother Dick. The spotlight went to Bill, Bob, Barry, John and Susie, and their Mini-Mom, Barbara.
But this doesn't mean to say that Paul is the quiet Cowsill ... in fact, it's more true to say he's the family comedian! If you ever get to meet him and Bob together, be warned—they'll keep you in stitches.
Born Nov. 11, 1951 in Virginia, Paul has dark brown hair and eyes, is 5'11" tall and weighs 155 Ibs. And he adores chocolate malteds and sausage sandwiches — not necessarily together!
Paul owns a pet turtle named Oedipus; is a faithful follower of James Bond; and is fondly known as the Cowsills' very own 'dishwasher.' (At home in Newport, he used to wash all the family's dishes—by hand yet.)
Only recently did Paul switch from behind-the-scenes man to up-front performer. It happened on the Cowsills' first European tour, in Italy.
IN ITALY
The first stop the Cowsills made in Italy was for the San Remo Song Festival. They stayed at the Grand Albero del Mare Hotel. According to Bill, "the Italians are The grooviest people we've ever met. They're so warm. Every time I was introduced to somebody, they would come up and pat my cheek —

Paul is the family's very own dishwasher. And he hasn't broken a plate yet!
they're just the greatest."
The Cowsills entered the Festival with a song called L'Opere di Bartolomeo. They didn't win, but they did make friends with an Italian group called The Pokes who entered the Festival with the same song.
It was in Italy that Paul made his first big public performance. After doing T.V. and radio shows in Milan, Bill returned to New York in early February to attend college. But the rest of the family went on to Bologna and Rome with Paul as lead singer!

Who's teasing who? Looks as if Paul might be getting his own back.

IN LONDON
Only a brief period of time was spent in London—Paul was still acting as road manager here.
Between press conferences and radio interviews, the family did manage to get out and visit some of the famous London squares and buildings. "There was even a trip to Carnaby Street," Paul told us on their return, "but I didn't buy any clothes there."
At their big arrival press reception, the family met 500 members of the British press, photographers, DJ's and columnists. Halfway through their performance for the press, the Cowsills were interrupted twice by applause, and afterwards, they were asked to do three encores.
Only one thing marred the exciting London trip, and that was when they got ejected from the restaurant of their London hotel for singing at the breakfast table. "A waiter told us the manager had asked that we stop making a noise," Barbara Cowsill told us. "I informed him that it was music, not noise, but he said either we stop or we'd have to go. We settled the matter very simply — we ate in our room."
ACTIVE MEMBER
The tour is now over and the
Cowsills are back in New York.
Paul's public debut has been
made. But another European tour
is being planned for this year.
Will Paul make the second trip
as active performing member of
the Cowsills? He is certainly being
groomed for the spot . . . he'taking trumpet lessons, and he does
have a good voice. Originally, he
was a singing member of the
group, and it was only because
he decided he didn't want to perform that he changed roles. The
answer, then, as to whether Paul
really will be that surprise new
member of the group, lies with
Paul. But it won't be a surprise
to us if he is.
