John Cowsill: What He's Really Like
April 1970

Cowsill

His brothers call him a wise-guy and a great drummer—and he is. Ask him what the saddest moment in his life was and he'll tell you "finding out I couldn't bend over and touch my toes!"

Or ask him if he's afraid of anything and his answer will be "Yea. My brother Paul. He punches me a lot!" That's just one of John Cowsill's many characteristics—his sense of humor.

HAPPIEST MOMENT

Aside from his "wising-off" as Paul calls it, John is always very serious about one thing—his drums. In fact he says the happiest moment in his life is still to come. It will be the day he's presented with a solid purple drum set!

Drumming is the first big love in John's life! Wherever there are any drums around you can always count on him to be playing them! Once the situation got out of hand in the Cow-sill home for John just couldn't stop practicing on his drums until the rest of the family complained of headaches and drum playing was banned in the house!

Although brown haired John is the youngest of the Cowsill boys he certainly isn't the smallest! He weighs fifteen pounds more than Barry and stands about two inches taller. Of course he's close enough to Barry's dimensions that the two of them can share clothes, which they do all the time!

JOHN CAN BE A CUT-UP, but be also likes to spend some time alone.

JOHN IS A GREAT ONE for answering fan mail. He digs reading it too.

MAKE HIS EXIT

You might consider John to be the quiet one in the Cowsill bunch, though he can talk up quite a storm when . he gets upset or carried away by something! But mostly he doesn't like to associate with people who talk all the time and quite often during lengthy discussions he will quietly make his exist to some quiet corner of the house!

John doesn't mind being teased about his quiet streak, and in fact says quietness is one of the first things he looks for in a girl. He likes girls who don't get over excited about things and who don't .over-act. Natural beauty and a peaceful soul are what John is attracted to!

But John also likes girls who can go out and have a good time. One of his favorite dating places is Disney-land "where you can just have a lot of fun!" And fun is very important to John who even feels it is an important part of love. For love, as he describes it is "Respect, caring and having fun!"

PRETTY CLOSE

According to John, it's his older brother Bob he gets along with best."He's older and understands me the most. I guess because he's gone through most of the things that are happening to me now."

Still, it is Barry who John shares most experiences with and Barry who usually accompanies him to the local hamburger stand for their favorite of french fries and root-beer. "Well, we are pretty close," John smiles, "and there's not too much age difference between us."

BIG FAMILIES

"Big families are nice," John admits. "You've always got someone to hang around with. Even Susan, being a girl, doesn't cause too many problems. She used to be pretty awful when she was younger, always bothering me and being a tag-along. She used to. tell everyone I was so mean and a really terrible brother but now she's very nice most of the time and I really dig her!"

Of course with such a large family there are times when the boys get into squabbles! What John says is the worst punishment of all for any of the Cowsills is when they do something wrong and their Dad doesn't yell at them! Instead he just sort of ignores them! According to John, "This is the worst kind of punishment because you feel so turned off! Our dad is such a groovy and great guy that it is just terrible to feel rejected by him!"

SO CLUMSY

Actually John doesn't get into trouble too often, but when he does he says it's because he is so clumsy! Only last week he dropped a bag of groceries coming in through the kitchen and not long ago he spilled a can of green paint all over the carpet! Mini-Mom is very understanding when it comes to knowing boys and says she really can't be angry for it's just a stage John's going through and he will soon grow out of it!

How could anyone be angry with such an outasite guy anyway, even for a short time? It's like John himself says. "I'm just being me!"
