Cowsills

THERE ARE
NO STARS
in the cowsills

In the entertainment world, those with fame, fortune, and good looks more often than not consider themselves stars and they don't hesitate to let you know it! Maybe that's why it's almost a blessing to discover the wonderful world of the Cowsill family!

The Cowsills have everything it takes to be musical stars today—talent, hit records, Las Vegas performances and solid booked tours. But if you compare them with many other successful musical groups you will find something missing and it is this that makes the Cowsills one of the most beloved groups of all!

It's noticeable right away from the very start the first time you meet them or even when watching them perform. What they don't have in the family is the famous Hollywood ego-trip attitude that success so often brings!

The reason for this is a simple one, too—it's LOVE! You see, the Cowsills are so busy loving everyone else that they don't have time to be in love with themselves first!

Barbara Cowsill's children have never doubted that she loved them and through the years as they've grown older they've grown even closer together! It is the knowledge that each one needs the others that sets them apart from the typical Hollywood crowd.

BACK SCRATCHES

The Cowsill's understand each other and they know that there are times when you need someone just to be near you. Mini-Mom says that she can always tell when these times are. "They'll come to me sometimes at night and I can tell by their expression or attitude that they really need me right now. Maybe they don't want to talk, they might feel like just being close.

"Of course when they were smaller they wanted to be cuddled and hugged and now that they're older they've gotten more independent.

Still, Barry, when he's tired he likes me to scratch his back!

"John loves his head rubbed and when he's very tired, or has come home late from a date, he'll lay on the couch with his head on my lap until he gets too heavy and I tell him to split!

LOVES TO HUG

"Paul is really affectionate and he just loves to go around hugging people—me, or Susan, or his date. One time he hugged me so hard he fractured one of my ribs and I had to go to the doctor!"

Perhaps it is the warm and close-association that comes from being a part of a large family that's helped mold the Cowsills into such great performers and beautiful people. Anytime anyone stepped out of line he had the rest of the group to reckon with!

The Cowsills know their own ability. They know whether they're doing something well or not so there's no fighting or bickering about it. And they're very objective in criticizing themselves and each other, too, knowing that criticism often helps a great deal!

FAMILY CONFERENCE

Everyone in the group gets a turn to sing lead so no one ever feels slighted. Once in a while two of the boys may both want to sing the lead, but everything's always worked out in a family conference.

"If two want to do the lead," says Mini-Mom, "then both of them cut a tape and we take a vote on who did it better. Everyone accepts the decision as final so feelings are never hurt because everyone is honest!"

One time both Bob and Paul wanted to sing the lead and each felt he could do the job best. They both tried and when the tapes were played back, Paul started laughing at his side! Of course he still wanted to do it, but after hearing Bob's version he knew what was best for the group and admitted it!

"When you work for a group you want what's best for everyone not what's best for yourself and the Cow-sill's always follow this policy," says Paul.

NEVER SLIGHTED

Even Susan never feels slighted. "Sometimes," says Barbara, "she gets very aggravated because the boys will be working up new material and unintentionally forget her. Then she speaks up and they see that she gets her fair share!" Recently she just learned "Honey Pie" by the Beatles and "Where is Love," from the movie "Oliver!"

But there is something else that has contributed to the making of the Cowsill family and this is not only the ability to share but the desire to share and to please one another!

True, before the Cowsills became famous there were lots of times when they had no choice. They had to share because often there wasn't enough to go around! Now, of course, everything is different, but the Cow-sills have remained the same!

INSPECTION TIME

In fact, Mini-Mom always stands for inspection when she's wearing something new! She wants her boys to be pleased at the way she looks and if they don't like something she wants to know!

"I feel that they've listened to me while they were growing up," laughs Mini-Mom, "and now it's the time for me to listen to them!"

Everytime the group gets a new outfit made, it is the choice of one person. "Everyone has their own idea on what they'd like to wear," says Barry, "so we trade off and if it isn't your turn to choose you know it's coming up and you respect the decision of the one whose turn it is!"

The magic that is truly the Cowsills comes from the love, kindness and concern they have in their hearts for everyone! It isn't something you can put there overnight—it comes from within.

Putting the welfare of other first leaves no room for any "swelled heads" or "star complexes" and for the Cowsills, the expression "after you," is something they really mean every day!
