Cowsills

From behind closed doors, inside locked diaries and through peep-holes come sensational facts ... practically guaranteed to shock and stun you!

YOU'VE HEARD about people having "skeletons in their closets," family secrets they'd hate to have get out. Well, since they're such a large family, The Cowsills have a few large skeletons. And they've gotten out— and right into the pages of TL!

If you want to hear what happens when Paul, Bob, Barbara, Barry, Susan and John let loose with some of the hotter family secrets, keep reading. It wouldn't be fair to say who told what on who ... it wouldn't be very safe for the "whos," either!

... Paul Cowsill has a hidden, secret hope about giving up his musical career! Eventually, he'd like to be a professional football player and maybe a physical education teacher after that!

.. . Bob absolutely hated the move to the West Coast! He knew he wasn't going to like it — and he intended to make everyone as unhappy as he was about it! Then the weather got good, he made new friends, and he forgot to complain. Now he just loves it out there!

. . . Mom Barbara didn't want to join the group 'cause she was so scared! The kids had to bribe her with a new dress for every song she recorded with them when they first asked her to do "The Rain, The Park, and Other Things." Since then, she's really enjoyed it. Now if they had to come up with clothes for songs—they'd have to buy out a department store! Because she likes it so much, she sings whenever she can!

... Barry secretly hopes to be able to write some of the songs the group does all by himself! He wants to do the words — and music! He's got some ideas on a long song all about the family and the funny things that have happened to them since they started their careers way back in Newport, Rhode Island.

. . . Susan keeps hoping their next tour will be a huge success for a very special, private reason. Her dad promised her that The Cowsills can buy a ranch if the tour is really good. Susan loves horses, and she goes riding every chance she gets. She's so good, she didn't fall off even the first time she got on a horse!

. . . John has a special "telephone" voice he uses whenever he wants to order something or wants some information. He imitates his mom's voice so people won't treat him like a kid. Or he fools around with an English accent!

. . . Paul thinks live performances can get to be a drag! If you're right there in front of the people and you make a mistake, there's no way of erasing it. You're really on the spot if something goes wrong, like a busted guitar string. But it's great to hear the applause, Paul thinks, and not have to wait to count record sales to find out if people really like you!

. . . Bob is sort-of a loner. He insists on having his privacy and it's very important to him to have a room of his own. Once in New York, his father had to get him and brother Bill a separate apartment! The two boys were going nutty and feeling restless because they didn't have space to themselves. Bob needs peace and quiet, especially to concentrate on his work.

. . . Barbara's glad the older Cowsill kids put the younger ones down sometimes! It keeps the kids from getting conceited or thinking of themselves as "stars." Even though they're all celebrities, they lead normal family lives. In other words, there's the usual fun, quarrels, making up and personality differences.

. . . Barry's idea of the perfect girl is someone who can play football, cook like his mom, look like a dream in party dresses, and flip out over music. That's a large order to fill, but Barry's sure that someday he'll meet someone just like that—and really fall for her!

. . . Susan Cowsill first learned she was a member of the group when everybody started yelling at her. She used to sit around on the porch of the Newport house listening to her brothers practice and asking to join, but they just ignored her. The day they started ordering her around, telling her what to do and not do—she knew she was in! They were treating her like a professional.

. . . John claims to have the second longest hair length in the family, but still isn't satisfied. He'd love to go on a ninety-day tour, and never visit a barber once. He likes long hair 'cause it reminds him that The Cowsills' rendition of "Hair," did so well. Besides, long hair makes him feel groovy!

. . . All the family members want out at one time or other—out of the group and the family! They're together so much, they can't help getting on each other's nerves. They see each other practically twenty-four hours a day, and they get restless. What do they do? Talk it out. Take long walks alone. Take short one-or-two-day vacations from each other. It gives everyone a chance to work out what's bothering him, and to come back feeling friendly again.

. . . So far Paul's attended fifteen schools in eleven years. He hates to leave old friends behind and can't stand the constant change of moving. On the other hand, he likes to travel—as long as he knows he's going back to a permanent home. That's why he hopes the move to California was the last one. From now on, he just wants trips and visits—but no more relocating!

. . . Bob says he works best under a "gun" — under pressure! A lot of the songs he writes end up being thrown away—but most of them are okay. Right now he has about nine new songs partly written. He'll take his time about finishing them—unless he has to get them out suddenly for an album.

. . . Barbara grew up with eight brothers and sisters—and that's one reason why she's so close to all her kids. She's used to big family living and big family problems. She knows exactly how her kids feel being part of a big family—'cause she once felt that way. So she lets them be individuals and tries to give them as much privacy and space as possible.

. . . Barry burns incense in his room every night and drives brother John nuts! It's to keep the mosquitoes away, actually. But John says he just can't stand incense—and he'd rather have the mosquitoes!

. . . Susan has this thing about glue! She likes to spread it all over her hands, wait till it's dry, and then peel it off. Other "oddities?" She hates to wear dresses around the house because she can't do the things she likes to in them. Especially yoga, which she does on her head!

. . . John really flips for scary movies. His favorite kind are Christopher Lee flicks. He gets a big bag of popcorn and sits in the back row of a theater that's playing a horror film. Then he eats, shivers and shakes, feeling completely happy and relaxed!
