Cowsills

JOHN AND BARRY Cowsill are real heroes to thousands of girls all over the world, girls who think a date with either of them would be a dream-come-true. But what's life like for them backstage, at school and on actual dates? Are they the lovers everyone thinks they are—or are they just a pair of losers?

Barry Cowsill's been a real girl-watcher as long as he can remember. And ever since The Cowsills became popular, he thinks it's been even more fun than ever! "What I dig in school is watching the guys watching the girls watching me," Barry says. "It's really a gas."

But Barry's popularity does have its drawbacks. "You do get a little static being a Cowsill," he says. "Kids think we're going to be snobs, which we aren't. But once they get to know us, it's okay."

Being a member of a famous group sometimes leaves little time to meet and go out with girls. Does Barry find himself losing out on many dates because of The Cowsills' heavy concert and recording schedule?

The answer is yes and no. Barry does get chances to go out with lots of different girls, including fans. But often long tours will interfere with his dating life. Sometimes he has to leave behind a girl he'd just met and really wanted to see more of. And sometimes he'll have to go weeks and weeks without even one date.

What kind of girl does Barry go for? All kinds, as long as they "aren't too dippy, that is." Looks aren't too important to Barry if a girl's neat and feminine.

"I like a girl to have a good sense of humor," Barry adds, "And one who's quiet but not shy."

A girl who has fun dating Barry is sure to enjoy some of the things he does—science, television cartoons, dancing, water sports, playing badminton, listening to music and eating lobster for instance. For her, he's sure to be a real winner!

John Cowsill believes in being honest about what kinds of girls attract him. "When someone asks you 'What do you notice first about a girl?,' you're supposed to say something about looking for a good personality," he says. "But what I really want to say is 'I like groovy-looking girls!' "

It's a cinch that lots of groovy-looking girls think John's pretty groovy, too. But since he's still pretty new at the dating game, girls can sometimes make John feel like a loser, too, even though they don't mean to.

"That first date can be a real killer," he says. Although John likes to talk a lot and always seems to have something funny to say, he's sometimes a little shy the first time he goes out with a girl. And if she's shy, too . . . ?

"After awhile, you sort of get used to each other, though," he says.

John really goes for girls with good imaginations—who like to daydream about space travel and flying the way he does—and who enjoy horror movies. John doesn't watch too much television, however, and says "cartoons drive me crazy."

A girl's never bored with John Cowsill as long as she doesn't mind just loafing around and going swimming and eating lemon meringue pie!

What do you think? Are John and Barry lovers or loser?
