IT ISN'T EASY to be a Cowsill. It isn't all fame and pleasure and excitement. Sure, The Cowsills love their family and their work. They enjoy making music and having lots of loyal fans. But part of being a Cowsill isn't much fun. There are times that not-so-loyal fans and enemies start spreading ugly rumors about them, saying things that are cruel and untrue.
What hurts The Cowsills most is the thought that some fans might actually believe these rumors. And once a rumor starts, it's almost impossible to stop. But loyal Cowsill fans can help by finding out the truth and letting everyone know it. Here are a few of the answers you can give the next time you hear someone spreading a rumor about The Cowsills.
RUMOR: The Cowsills are real snobs, and they won't even talk to anyone who isn't a star!
ANSWER: The Cowsills are among the friendliest kids you could meet anywhere, and they aren't a bit snobbish. If anything, they sometimes have to work extra hard to prove they aren't snobbish when other people expect them to be. "Kids think we're going to be stuck-up, and we aren't," says Barry. "Once they know us, though, everything's cool."
RUMOR: The Cowsills look like one big happy family on stage, but in real life, they hate each other!
ANSWER: The Cowsills love each other very much and have great times together, both onstage and off. Of course, like any other family, they have their occasional fights and disagreements.
"It can be a drag going to school with your little brothers," Paul says. "But if you have to do something, you adjust to it and like it."
"We're a group as performers and together as a family so much that even my mother and father want out sometimes," he adds. "You know, seven kids running around could get you a bit nutty. But if you get uptight, you reason it out."

RUMOR: The Cowsills get to have anything they want, and they're really spoiled!
ANSWER: In spite of all the money they earn. The Cowsills still live modestly. Paul, Barry, John and Susie have allowances, but they don't get everything they want. Susie, for instance, has wanted a horse for a long time, and she even had to wait awhile before getting her dog Suebar.
Barry, who says emphatically that he's not spoiled, adds, "Spoiled kids give me a pain. They get too much attention at the wrong time and too little attention at the right time. Like when a kid is in a store and starts screaming for something and gets it. That's wrong."
All The Cowsills learned early that they wouldn't get whatever they wanted just by screaming—or even by becoming stars.
RUMOR: The Cowsills aren't really a family at all!
ANSWER: Of course The Cowsills are a family. All you have to do is look at them to know they must be related.
RUMOR: The Cowsills really don't have much musical talent. Most of what you hear on their records was done by other—better—musicians in the studio.
ANSWER: Anyone who's ever seen The Cowsills perform in person knows that rumor couldn't possibly be true. Not only do The Cowsills make fantastic records, but their live performances of the same songs are just as good. They've got talent to spare!
RUMOR: Now that Bob's married, the group will break up completely very soon.
ANSWER: The Cowsills are definitely not breaking up. Although Bob now has a home of his own with his lovely wife, Nanci, he'll probably stay with the group. Even if he should decide to do some solo work, Paul, John, Barry and Susie will continue making music together. It's not just their business—it's what they love to do best!
