"I like to take. Could I tell you a secret? When my brothers are all nice to me, they let me come along, and I like that. What's really fun is like being with my brothers and they say, 'Hit the funny chord.'

" I did the 'We Can Fly' album first. I had wanted to work because I thought it was cool.

"They used to practice on the porch in Newport, and I kept asking. I found out that if they didn't yell at me, that meant I wasn't in the group. Finally they yelled at me. I was in."

Subar is an adopted member of the Cowsill family. So far, MGM Records hasn't signed him. But he's important, because he's Susan's. And there is grounds for suspicion that this black, unclipped poodle is liked better by Susan than even Davy Jones of The Monkees.

"I love horses. My Dad says maybe we can get a ranch after we finish our next tour. On my birthday my brother Bob is going to take my horseback riding. You know, the first time I tried, I was good. Most people fall off. I bet I learned from watching TV. I like horses better than better than dogs, but you can't have a horse in New York.

"I woke up on Christmas in New York saying, 'Oh please let there be a dog there.'

"My brothers and I went around looking. John found a book saying 'How to Train Your Poodle.' But we couldn't find a dog. I hadn't been allowed in my brothers apartment. I couldn't understand why. Then my brother found a box in the kitchen. I burst out crying, I was so excited. I used to feed him out of a spoon. Would you like to see him lie down on his back in the doll bed?"

Subar doesn't talk much, but he does like to lie on his back in the doll bed.

"I like 'Julia' and 'Mod Squad' and 'Mission: Impossible' and Roy Rogers. My favorite television stars are The Monkees, even though they don't have their series any more. My favorite movie stars are Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Harris. Did you see 'Camelot?' I saw it nine times. I cried every time at the end. You know, you think you're not going to, and you do. If I'd have known it was a legend, I wouldn't have cried.

"I like to cook. Scrambled eggs. But I like to cook when my mother bakes cakes. You get all that goo on your hands.

"Do you know what I like to do with glue? I like to spread it all over my hands and then peel it off.

"I never wear dresses in the house. It's so awkward. You can't do anything. I like to do Yoga. I do it on my head.

"I started some knitting, but I'm too busy. One year: about 14 rows. I don't knit anything; I just knit.

"I like flowers and stuffed animals. Pink and green. I like to dress Subar up in doll clothes.

"I like school because of my friends. My friend in school is my best friend. We spent the night in the boys' tent because they were rehearsing. We weren't scared until got late and we had the Ouija board and it started to move. I thought it as one o'clock, but it really wasn't.

"I like math. This last time I got straight 'A's.' I used to hate math until I learned how to do it.

"After school I listen to records and watch TV with Subar. I like to draw, but I don't draw pictures; I draw designs.

"What I like best about concerts is afterwards when all the fans come backstage. Sometimes they try to chase us back to the hotel. One time they made us wait until all the fans were gone. I didn't like that. I cried when I didn't get to meet Davy Jones of The Monkees.

"You know, other people's houses always seem nicer than your. I always wanted a canopy bed. I thought of all the things I would do with it. Now, look, I have one and I haven't done a thing."

Subar didn't seem to mind. He looked like an ad for tranquilizers.

"Would you look at him? He thinks he's tired and he hasn't done a thing all day. I'm the one that's been running around like crazy!"
