OUR HAPPIEST
AND SADDEST CHRISTMAS
Our worst Christmas actually turned out ot be the best one we've ever had. Here we were in New York not at home in Rhode Island, and none of us was really that crazy about living in a city as big as New York. And to top it off, there were, all nine of us, stuffed into an apartment, literally crawling over each other.
Then Susan had this thing about wanting a dog. It mattered more to her than anything. And I kept thinking to myself, "That's just what this place needs - a dog!"
The holidays rolled around. "The season to be jolly" promised to be pretty grim. I mean, we didn't stop having fun, but laughs were getting harder and harder to come by.
But, funny as it may seem, that Christmas was the happiest we've ever had!
First off, Dad knew that something had to give regarding space. He got Bill and me our own apartment - "The Boys' Room" - adjoining company headquarters. Now that was really great, particularly when he and Mom could have taken advantage of the peace and quiet themselves!
Then Susan got her dog! It made her so happy I wouldn't have cared if it had been some huge hound, but fortunately, Sueba was just a poodle puppy, about as big as the palm of your hand. Bill and I had been in on the surprise, because Sueba had stayed with us in "The Boys' Room" so Susan wouldn't find out before Christmas morning.
It wasn't a Christmas like we were used to, but it had to be the best we'd ever had!
