MGM In The 'Chips'
NEW YORK - Although Arnold
Maxin took over the Presidency
of MGM Records only a
few short weeks ago (retaining
his duties at the helm of the
Big 3 publishing firm), pronounced
results are already in
effect.
. . .
Other Labels' Artists Help
Maxin noted that the MGM
family increasingly has also
been able to utilize artists performing
only on the soundtracks
of MGM movies, as well
as their records of these
themes, for promotional purposes,
even when they are not
under contract to the diskery.
He cited Judy Collins, w'ho
sang in "The Subject Was
Roses"; Lulu, ditto in "Hot
Millions"; Ella Fitzgerald, the
same for "A Place for Lovers";
and the Cowsills, who sang in
"The Impossible Years"-only
the latter group records for
MGM Records.
Definitely on the upgrade,
too, as Maxin sees it, in the upbeat
MGM outlook is tape sales.
"It's the young buyer," he reported.
"It's the kid who controls
the radio at home and the
car."
