Mercury Lounge - With twanging, whiskey-throated downtempo numbers emerging as the overworked device of the moment, it's heartening to know that some countfiried rockers are doing more than just going through the motions. All-too-rare case in point: the Continental Drifters, an alterna-roots supergroup starring Susan Cowsill and sometime R.E.M. keyboardist Peter Holsapple. Not to be confused with irksome Saturday Night Live guitarist G. E. Smith's outfit, the High Plains Drifters, the Continentals specialize in unassuming evocative stuff that's short on glitz, long on grit. They play 10/8, with Steve Wynn and Baby Steps. 9/30: Clem Snide; Siren. 10/1: Slobberbond. 10/2: Sportsguitar; F***. 10/3: Gary Lucas; D. Davis 10/5: Throneberry. 10/6: Big Sandy & His Fly Rite Boys. 10/7: Robert Mirabal; Bill Kirchen. 217 E. Houston St.
