The Cowsills

From left to right: Bob, John, Barry and Bill Cowsill

When Ed Sullivan signs you up for ten shows, when the TV networks all want you to have your own series next season and when only your third record becomes the best-selling record in the country, you’ve got it made!

That’s the fabulous story of The Cowsills – who are proving that the family that sings together swings together!

Brothers Dick and Paul Cowsill are the group’s road managers. Their “mini-Mommy,” Barbara Cowsill, sings whenever her clear voice is needed for harmony. The only sister in the family, baby Susan, is the family pet. And Bud Cowsill, The family’s father and husband, makes sure that everyone is doing the right thing in the right place at the right time!

But the heart of the group, the guys who make the Cowsills sound happen, are Bill, Bob, Barry and John Cowsill. Let’s meet them.

BILL just turned 20, on January 9th, which makes him the oldest brother. He is the most disciplined Cowsill, because his brothers are sister have always looked to him for advice. He takes everything very, very seriously, and he keeps to himself. Bill is great at having the people around him get to know each other . . . without letting them get to know him! Bill is tall, handsome and mysterious!

BOB will be 19 on August 26th. And he’s just the personality opposite of Bill. Bob takes nothing seriously (except his music) and he has a family reputation for always being on hand when crazy things happen at the Cowsill house (which, by the way, is a mad, mad 22-room mansion in Rhode Island!). But, at other times, Bob has a wild habit of disappearing – and no one will see him for hours. He never reveals where he’s been, but, of course, he always comes back!

BARRY will be 14 on September 14th, and he’s a natural entertainer! “When he laughs,” his brothers say, “his freckles laugh, too!” Barry was the original drummer for the group until John became old enough to hand the job. Barry now plays the bass guitar and sings. He is an honor student at St. Augustine’s School in Newport, Rhode Island, which he attends along with John.

JOHN will be 12 on March 2nd, old enough to play the drums and challenge Barry for the family freckle championship! He’s a very happy boy who’s always bubbling over good thoughts. “I’m happy and I just want to be me,” he says. “I love all the colors in the world!” If he could have anything in the world, it would be a motorcycle. He’ll soon be able to afford it, but it won’t help his dream come true! Because John sill has six years to go before he can get a license to drive that ‘cycle!
