Cowsills

The Boys with their mini-mommy

"When the kids do th eright thing they know it. And when they do the wrong things, they know it. However it is difficult for any father to actually define right from wrong. The only constant is love. If I slip in some area, love will cover it. It's crazy philosophy but I think you read me."

Bud Cowsill believes that love is the key word in raising a family . . . especially his.

Bud Cowsill, father of the famed COWSILLS has said on many occasions.

"Whenever any member of the family has a problem, we do like all families . . . sweat, all the while helping it work itself out."

This simple philosophy is perhaps the key to the COWSILLS fantastic chart success through out the world.

The Cowsills name first hit the American air-waves with a number titled "The Rain, the Park and Other Things" . . . five weeks after this record had been released the Cowsills had become one of the hottest prooperties on the American Scene.

"The Rain, The Park and Other Things" enjoyed much the same success in Australia . . . reaching No. 4 on Go-Set's National Top Forty.

Last week the Cowsills received a GOLD record to mark a million sales.

The Cowsills have followed this success with another chart stopper titled "INDIAN LAKE." As like the American charts, "INDIAN LAKE" has shot to the top ten on the Australian charts.

The COWSILLS over the past six moths have become known as the FIRSST FAMILY OF THE AMERICAN POP SCENE . . . the corporation comprises of BILL, BOB, BARRY, and JOHN COWSILL who form the group.

Their fascinaing blond headed mini-mommy BARBARA COWSILL, also adds her sweet clear voice to the boys harmony whenever it is needed.

This is the COWSILL family we hear on records, but then there is the rest of the family who play just an important part in the group's activities.

Father BUD COWSILL acts as counsellor and advisor, brothers DICK and PAUL are the road managers and finallyy baby Cowsill, SUSAN, who's adored by all the family runs the messages and acts as mascot. Baby Susan occasionally adds her tiny voice to the group's records, much to the delight of the family.

Lady Luck Smiles

Success hasn't always been on the Cowsills side as not so long ago the family didn't have a dollar to their name.

Although the family lived in a beautiful mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, their debts appeared to outweigh their assets.

They had no money, the phones had been disconnected, there wasn't any oil for the burneres, so the Cowsills faced a cold and bitter winter.

It had reached the stage where brothers Bill and Bob were forced to chop up the clothes dressers to make firewood.

The end seemed near when the family faced losing their stately home so in a desperate last bid the Cowsills moved to New York to gain financial help.

In New York, the Cowsills pooled their last remaining dollars to rent a recording studio.

After recording a demonstration disc they sent it off to a record producer and agent and kept thir fingers crossed.

The agent, Lenny Stogel, listened to the demo tape and couldn't believe his ears. He immediately arranged his audition with the Cowsills.

Lenny couldn't believe his eyes and flipped immediately. The Cowsills performed for over an hour and included such songs as "Reach Out," "Monday, Monday" and "Knock On Wood."

After they had finished, Lenny raced them up to his office and signed them up. A week later he clinched a deal with MGM Records and the Cowsill family were on their way to stardom.

It was only a matter of a few short weeks that the COWSILLS had become a top forty phenomenon with the smash hit "The Rain, The Park and Other Things."

The COWSILLLS reigned supreme as the FIRST FAMILY of the American top forty charts, residence NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND.
