IT FINALLY HAPPENED! I really and truly met Davy Jones! I'd been dreaming about it for so long that I still can't believe I really met him! But I did- and he kissed me !!! Gosh, I'm getting all carried away. Let me tell you about this wonderful experience from the beginning. I want you to share my wonderful, exciting experience with me, cos I'm sure that you love Davy just as much as I do!!
THE BEGINNING
It all began in September of 1966, when I first started watching The Monkees on TV. It was my very favorite tV show, and I immediately got a super big crush on the Monkee with the adorable English accent. I liked everything about him- the way he walked, the way he sang, the way he danced- and I especially loved that super sweet smile of his. Just everything!!!
My one wish was to meet him in person, and needless to say- all that I talked about was Davy Jones. I even wrote him fan letters. And you know what? Davy answered one of my letters!! So all of you 16-ers who write to your favs, don't give up hope. I couldn't believe my eyes at first, but there it was in black and white - a letter to me from Davy Jones!! In his letter, Davy said that he too hoped we would meet someday. That was over a year ago, and we Cowsills were still living in New York City. Davy lived in California. I thought I'd never get to meet him. But I didn't give up wishing- and you guessed it- I didn't give up talking about him either.
Time passed and a few months later, we Cowsills moved to Santa Monica, California. I must confess, the first thing that popped into my mind when Dad told us we were moving to the West Coast was, "That's were Davy lives - maybe I'll get to met him now!!" Well no such luck! We moved to California last September, almost a year ago, and I had just about given up hope of ever meeting Davy when a wonderful thing happened!!
ENTER- TOMMY BOYCE
One afternoon, not too long ago, I was sitting in the reception area of our manager's office, waiting for my dad (who was in a meeting with Lenny Stogel, our manager). Suddenly, the front door opened and in walked Tommy Boyce. "Uncle Lenny" (he's not really a relative, but we've adopted him into our family) also manages Boyce and Hart, and Tommy dropped in to talk some business. Since my dad was with "Uncle Lenny" in his private office, Tommy sat down to wait and we began to chat. Naturally, I got around to discussing Davy Joners. (Davy seems to pop into all of my conversations). Tommy didn't mind talking about Davy, cos they're good friends. Not only do Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart have an office at Screen Gems, the also wrote and produced many of the Monkees hit records. After a moment, Tommy looked at me smilingly and said "Susie, would you like me to introduce you to Davy Jones?"
Well I just sat there with my mouth wide open - in shock and totally speechless! Finally, I managed to mumble, "C-c-could you - would you really??"
Tommy grinned his adorable grin and said "I can and I certainly will. As soon as your dad is finished with his meeting, we'll make the arrangements, okay?"
I don't really recall what happened after that. It's a good thing my dad was there, cos I was too excited to even remember my own name - let alone any of the details of how, when and where I would meet Davy! However, I do remember asking if my girl friend Lauren could come along too. Lauren is Uncle Lenny's daughter and (naturally) she loves Davy too. Uncle Lenny, Dad and Tommy agreed, and after a long discussion - the plans for my big day were all set!!
MORE SURPRISES!
A few days later, Lauren and I were on our way to the Screen Gems offices on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. That's not the place where the Monkees recording studios are. It's the building where all of the Screen Gems executives have their offices - and it was also the place where we were going to meet Davy Jones in person! Once there, Tommy Boyce escorted us into a room, sat us down - and went off to get Davy. to my surprise, I was very calm - or at least I thought I was! Suddenly, the door opened and when I looked up- there stood Micky Dolenz, grinning, and looking just like I'd seen him on TV hundreds of times! Micky winked at us and said "Davy will be right in."
He had no sooner completed this sentence when, for some reason beyond my control - I let out a gigantic scream!! Micky laughed and was very understanding. He sat down to talk with Lauren and me - and I managed to get up enough courage to ask him for his autograph.
When Micky left, I really got nervous! It seemed as though hours had passed while Lauren and I waited for Davy to come. Of course, it really hadn't been long at all, but I began to wonder - What if he doesn't come? I didn't know what to do, so every ten seconds I would go to the door and look down the hall. And then I saw him!!! Davy Jones - with his dog "Susie" on a leash - was walking towards me!! Well you guessed it! I didn't want to - but I screamed again! And then I ran back into the room to wait for Davy like I was supposed to. The next thing I remember was Davy's face smiling down at me and Davy saying "Hello Susan".
Somehow, I remembered to introduce Lauren. Davy shook our hands and sat down to chat with Lauren and me. Suddenly, I felt relaxed. Davy was so wonderful, just like all of you who spend so many Monday nights watching the Monkees on TV, I had spent three years wondering what Davy Jones was really like. I don't know why I should have worried at all, for in real life, Davy is just as lovable and nice as I knew he would be. He's kind and considerate, and not at all snobby. While we were sitting there talking, Davy autographed a beautiful drawing of himself and gave it to me. He wrote: "To Susan - best wishes and love, Davy Jones".
Lauren and I got lots of other goodies too! Davy signed autographs for some of our friends and gave us Monkee LP's and posters. Then he asked me to send him a copy of the Cowsills' itinerary, cos he wants to come and see our show one day. Davy promised to send me a copy of his itinerary too!
THE "SPECIAL" GIFT
All at once, Davy looked at his watch. "Gosh I'm late - I have to go. I'm so sorry," he said.
For a second or two, Lauren and I just stood there - once again speechless. For a minute, I thought I was going to cry - cos I didn't want to see Davy leave. Davy walked to the door, then he suddenly turned and came walking back across the room. And - guess what he did? He leaned down to kiss both Lauren and me! Lauren is kind of shy and when Davy bent to kiss her, she turned her head. But I just stood there and - guess what? Davy kissed me - right on the lips!!
I always wondered what my first kiss would be like. I don't have to tell you how wonderful it was. Of course, I never thought it would come from Davy Jones! Now "my first kiss" is even more unforgettable. But more than that, I'll never forget Davy Jones. He's even more wonderful than I ever imagined and, needless to say, I'll always remember that special day when my dream of meeting Davy Jones came true!
