The Cowsills In Magazines

What Makes a Legend: Dwight Twilley

Essential listening: The pair recorded two power pop standards, Sincerely and Twilley Don’t Mind. Fuelled by melody, harmony, and the big jangling beat of ‘60s AM radio, Twilley and Seymour’s tight harmony songs about girls pay tribute to their teenaged inspiration, the Beatles. Post-Seymour, Twilley carried on as a solo artist, flanked by Twilley Band guitarist Bill Pitcock IV and vocalist Susan Cowsill (the littlest member of family band the Cowsills who sparked The Partridge Family). Seymour went on to record solo, work as a session player, and sing background vocals with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (“American Girl”, “Breakdown”).

What he’s doing now: The past decade has seen a vigorous reissue and compiling program for all of Twilley’s recorded works including live shows, covers collections, his Beatles tribute, eight volumes of Rarities, and a documentary in the works. A brand new album, Green Blimp, recorded at home in Tulsa with Pitcock IV and Cowsill, is topnotch Twilley, on board with his patented melodies, harmonies, and the promise of magic in the rock ‘n’ roll night.
