Cowsills Ink 10 P A Deal For Sullivan
NEW YORK – The Cowsills, MGM’s hot family act, have signed a 10-appearance deal for the Ed Sullivan Show. When the deal ends in June of 1969, the Cowsills will have appeared at least 10 times, although the figure could be more. First date is set for Oct. 29 with a possibility that the group will also do Sullivan’s Christmas Eve stanza on Dec. 24
It’s understood that the pact calls for their exclusive appearance on Sullivan TV’er, unless they are granted permission to appear elsewhere. Group’s first outing for MGM is a chart success, the number 21 {bullet} spot on this week’s Top 100. It’s called “The Rain, The Park & Other Strange Things.”
Deal was worked out between Bob Precht, producer of the Sullivan program, MGM Records, Lenny Stogel, group’s personal manager, and Ashley-Famous, the booking agency.

The Cowsills’ nucleus consists of Bill, Bob, Barry and John Cowsill. Their mother Barbara Cowsill lends her voice to the boys’ harmony whenever it is needed. The road managers, Dick and Paul Cowsill, who chose not to enter the performing end of the business, keep equipment straight and in order throughout their journeys. The Cowsills live in a 22-room mansion atop one of the few Newport, Rhode Island hills. Ivy grows all over the walls of the house, windows are broken, screens are hanging. It all has an air of the “unreal.” There are seven bathrooms and one shower. “Water pressure isn’t so great,” explains Bob. “The best time to take a shower is around 3 o’clock in the morning.” Bill, born January 9, 1948, coordinates. He is the oldest member of his family and is accustomed to having his brothers look to him for the say. He attends Rhode Island College where his forte is English. He writes his own lyrics. Bob, born August 26, 1949, is all A’s and B’s in school. Barry, born September 14, 1954, plays bass guitar and sings. John, the little drummer, was born on March 2, 1956. He loves basketball and would also love to know how to fly by himself. The Cowsills’ current single, “The Rain, The Park, And Other Things,” is number 21 on the charts this week.
