Capitol Scores Heavy Grammy Count;
'Up, UP & Away'Nabs Record Of Year
NEW YORK—Capitol swept through
the 10th annual NARAS Grammy
Awards with a total 15 awards, garnered
primarily by “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely
Hearts Club Band,” “Ode To Billie
Joe” and “By The Time I Get To
Phoenix!.” Columbia and Columbia
Masterworks took 11 awards with
RCA Victor following close behind on
a total of 8 Grammys. Soul City totaled
5 awards for “Up, Up And
Away,” Atlantic received 2 Grammys
for “Respect,” and Dot won 2 Grammys
for “Mission Impossible.” MGM,
Warner Bros./7-Arts, Stax, Liberty,
Epic, A&M, and Angel each received
1 Grammy.
Special Awards
The NARAS Trustees gave out two
special awards for 1967. One, for Jazz
or Classical Composition went to Duke
Ellington for “Far East Suite” and
another, for Best Contemporary Classical
Composition to Krzysztof Penderecki
for “The Passion And Death
Of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, According
To St. Luke.”
Steve Allen shared emcee chores
with Father Norman J. O’Connor.
Music was provided by Woody Herman
and his Orchestra and by the
Mothers Of Invention.
