There’s also the possibility that the Velvets’ departure from MGM is not so much instigated as unnoticed. Among the more astonishing revelations in the March Rolling Stone expose is that the label has “failed to keep Laura Nyro, Tim Hardin, Frank Zappa, and The Mothers Of Invention simple because their contracts had run out and [it] had failed to pick up their options.” Even in the wake of the clean-cut Cowsills’ third hit, the article continues, “MGM once again failed to pick up the option. Obviously aware of the mismanagement of the company, The Cowsills, let their option run out and the [re-signed] with MGM at a much higher rate.”
