Case in point: You might remember the Cowsills' recording of "Hair." The song was approved and appeared on an AFRTS disc, and it was in the Top 20. The Cowsills were a clean-cut, All-American family (like the Partridges), only these kids were real. They had a nationwide commercial on TV selling what else - MILK!
Now, Lieutenant Fuzz thought the song on AFRTS was a mistake. But since it was in the Top 20, he did the next best thing. He made us edit the song. There is a part in the break of the lyric that went: "Oh, say can you see - my hair - if you can, then my hair's too short" sung to the melody of our national anthem. It was supposed to be funny -- satire!!!
Lieutenant Fuzz said that is was derogatory to our revered national anthem and demanded that it be cut out of the song. Above all our objections, he simply said, "Cut it or lose it." We cut it, and it was the only version that played on AFVN.
