Later she (Rose Batson) was the first known black clerical employee hired by Macy's department store in New York City. Rose continued her second business as a designer-dressmaker by sewing for such celebrities as Lena Horne, Perry Como's wife, and Catherine Basie, Count Basie's wife. She also designed for the popular 1960s group, the Cowsills. In addition, she produced large fashion shows for community groups. Usually, the extravagant shows were held at the downtown Hilton Hotel. Fashion shows were then and now good sources of income for charity groups. The shows provided a wide audience for her designs.
