Initially, Slade considered having the Cowsills, whom he had seen perform on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, play the group. Executive Producer Bob Claver flew to Newport to spend a day with the Cowsill family. "We thought that maybe they could do the show," remembers Claver. "Then we realized that only the little girl would be appropriate."
"They did better with the characters they got," Bob Cowsill told the Los Angeles Times on October 15, 1993. "We had already grown beyond those ages anyway."
