I was stunned to hear that some Italian immigrants who came to America for a better life actually starved. My mind could hardly comprehend the full spectrum of what it meant to starve. I grew up surrounded by Italian delicacies, beautiful music, and wonderful vacations at the Jersey Shore. Years before the rise of the casinos, Atlantic City was a wonderful family beach where Dad and I built sandcastles and jumped the ocean waves. What fun! On the legendary Steel Pier we saw famous singing groups perform: Dino, Desi and Billy, The Cowsills, Herman's Hermits, the famous diving horse, Dick Clark's American Bandstand show, and Cousin Donnie performed there with Chicago in the early 1970s when one of their band members fell ill.
