The first Summerfest at the lakefront took place at the abandoned Nike missile site on July 17-26, 1970. The lineup of acts included Chicago, James Brown Revue, Sly and the Family Stone, Doc Severinsen, Cannonball Adderley, Procol Harum, Sarah Vaughan, the Cowsills, Andy Kim, Bobby Sherman, Ramsey Lewis, Pat Paulsen, Jose Feliciano and a whole bunch of local acts, including Thee Prophets, the Sidwalk Skippers, the Messengers, University Blues Band, the Esquires and Short Stuff. The estimated Summerfest crowd for Sly & the Family Stone concert was 100,000. . . .
