His remains were recovered from the Chartres Street wharf in New Orleans December 28, 2005, nearly four months after his sister last heard from him September 1 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Their mother Barbara Cowsill (July 12, 1928 – Jan. 30, 1985) had also been scattered at sea from Newport.

Ill with a variety of ailments including emphysema and osteoporosis, he died at 58 in Calgary, Alberta, the news of his death reaching his family just after the memorial service in Newport, Rhode Island, for his brother Barry. The ashes were to be scattered – near their former home – from Alligator Rock near Indian Avenue in Middleton, RI.
