The Cowsills
Before the Partridge Family, there were the Cowsills. Siblings Bill, Bob, Barry, John, Susan, and Paul grew up in Newport, Rhode Island, although Susan and Barry would eventually settle in New Orleans. Along with mom Barbara, they comprised one of the biggest pop acts of the late 1960s. Bill and Bob began their singing careers covering Everly Brothers hits. They recruited younger brothers Barry and John to play bass and drums. When their mother, Barbara, joined the band, they recorded The Rain, the Park and Other Things in 1967. The song climbed to number 2, selling over a million copies. After the band added two more siblings, sister Susan and brother Paul in 1968, Indian Lake reached the top 10, and in 1969 the group scored its biggest chart entry with the title song from the rock musical Hair.!"
Susan (May 20, 1959-) and Barry Cowsill (September 14, 1954-September 2005) were both living in New Orleans on August 29, 2005. Susan evacuated ahead of Hurricane Katrina, but her brother did not. She received a phone call from Barry on September 1, two days after the storm, but he was soon reported as missing. His body was found on December 28 but remained unidentified until January 4, 2005. He was fifty-one.!
