The Rolling Stones were virtually a précis of the 1970s, accom- modating every shift in public taste and absorbing every trend that passed before their eyes. They absorbed and absorbed and absorbed, until finally they resembled a big wet sponge. With the Beatles on one side of the seventies spectrum (befuddled spectators) and the Stones on the other (avid participants), a big black hole was created in the center, waiting to be filled up by the Who, Bob Dylan, the Cowsills, and other legendary sixties rock stars who had to find their way through the new decade.
