My childhood best friend, Steve, came out to L.A. for a visit. One night in my house, we watched a documentary about the '60s real-life family singing pop music group, The Cowsills. The doc was rather dark, as at the heart of this story was a father who managed the family with an iron fist and ultimately embezzled many millions of dollars from his wife and kids.
In the '60s, The Cowsills were an American phenomenon and had a number of hit songs on the radio, including "Hair," "The Rain, The Park and Other Things," and "Indian Lake," as well as having sung the theme song for the hit TV series, Love, American Style (1969). The TV series, The Partridge Family (1970), had been built upon the premise of the real-life Cowsills.
After I watched the documentary with Steve, I remembered one evening back in 1967 when my parents had taken my brothers and I out to dinner at a local diner. That night, I'd heard on the restaurant's . . .
