. . . At the same time, a growing number of female artists who also associate with this genre have been breaking the mold of mainstream music for many years. I could provide a long list of such artists, but for starters, take a listen to the music women have been writing for the past twenty years. Near the beginning of the twenty-first century, we hear Susan Cowsill's song "Palm of My Hand" from the breakout Americana album, Just Believe It (2005), a song which celebrates the power of a mature woman with lyrics like "I was willing to fight. / I was willing to ride into the night" to find what she both wanted and deserved. Cowsill's song lyrics feel prophetic of the way in which female singer-songwriters have continued to express that power through their music. . . .
