"Jan wrote a song about getting wiped out on Dead Man's Curve - and it happened to him," Brian Wilson told Behind the Music. Brian was recording tracks for Pet Sounds at the time of the accident. "I was just shocked," says Artie Kornfeld. "It was the year before I did 'The Rain, the Park & Other Things' with the Cowsills, so I think I was director of A&R for Mercury [Records]. I heard about it. I tried to get through, and I couldn't, and it just broke my heart."

Dean had begun working with agent Bill Hollingshead of Santa Ana, California, who booked a gig in early May at the 68th Annual National Orange Show in San Bernardino to test the waters for another reunion. There were a couple of changes in the Bel Air Bandits, with Randell Kirsch joining on bass and 27-year-old John Cowsill replacing Danny DeHart on drums. Both Randell Kirsch and Chris Farmer were multi-instrumentalists who could play guitar and bass interchangeable. Guitarist Mark Ward would continue to perform with the band. Sadly, Danny DeHart died a young man on June 24, 1998, at the age of 44, after a painful fight with mouth and throat cancer.
New drummer John Cowsill had been a member of the famous Cowsills, a family act originally produced by Artie Kornfeld in 1967 that became the inspiration for The Partridge Family. The Orange Show audience, nearly 4,000 strong, was just as enthusiastic for Jan & Dean as concert goers had been between '79 and '81. . . .
