Many folks don't recognize the name of Buddy Saltzman, but I doubt there any of us who hasn't heard his music. Buddy was a sessions drummer and played on MANY of the 1960's records we love, and even more.
Buddy is associated with such bands as The Monkees, The Cyrkle, The Coasters, The Four Seasons, Peter, Paul and Mary, and yes The Cowsills, to name a few.
And Buddy was more. It's been very obvious over the years that Buddy was a major mentor and friend of John.
In the October 2009 issue of Modern Drummer, John collaborated on an article about Buddy. Also in a 2009 Ludwig Artists interview, John listed Buddy as one of his “personal drumming influences.“
In response to Buddy's death John made this touching post: "We have lost a great drummer and an incredible friend this morning. Buddy Saltzman. For those of you who don't know his legacy...he was the main drummer on all the four season records and countless others. He also was the man on all our early Cowsill records. We became great friends over the last several years. He loved and lived for his family. He kept telling me "save the bread man"! Buddy you will be missed by this little 10 year old soul sitting behind you in the studio watching and learning what I would be doing live. You were and always will be an inspiration to me and every time I’m behind the kit I get better because of guys like you and others who have touched my musical note! God bless you and have fun with all the ones waiting for your count off ... I will truly miss our conversations, love you."
