Memorial Services and Parties

It had been Barry's request that when he was no longer on this earth that a party be held to celebrate his life. So Barry was honored.

A mass was held at St. Augustine's with the family attending. Then Barry's ashes were scattered into the ocean after a service at 1 PM on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at the King Park Gazebo. In typical Barry fashion, the ashes blew back into the crowd so he will always be with us. A bagpiper played, Richard read a eulogy, Susan read a writing by Barry and Bob & Paul sang "Knockin' On Heaven's Door." The Mayor was there and declared February 18th to be Barry Cowsill Day in Newport. Barry's urn had been decorated with some things found in his pocket at the time of his death. These include a rock, his glasses, a piece of wood, an eagle with Navy bars under it, a piece of paper Barry had written his phone number on. Also added were a concert ticket from April 19, 1968 and a bird that had been attached to an angel that Susan had placed on Barry's box.

Then from 7-11 PM of the same day, a party in Barry's honor will be held in the Viking Ballroom at the Viking Hotel in Newport. The ballroom was filled to capacity. Music was played, three videos shown, and many stories told. It was here that everyone learned of the death of brother Billy up in Canada.

New Orleans -

A second service/party will be held for Barry the following Sunday, February 26, in New Orleans. At 10:30 AM folks will gather on the banks of the Mississippi River in Woldenberg Park for a ceremony. After the service plans are to climb the steps of the levee with the New Wave Brass Band for a traditional New Orleans jazz funeral. The parade is to follow an NOPD escort through Jackson Square, down Royal Street and over to Bourbon Street and back to The Kerry for an Irish wake.
