The Show
My review/comments of this 3 hour show.
First let’s start with the best – John – parts.
1. He only sang California Dreamin’, his part of Getcha Back and his “love” of Why Do Fools Fall in Love. Of course I was highly disappointed.
2. John funnies: Right before the car songs, Mike was doing his usual thing about intermission because of their ages and needing to use the facilities. John says, “Hurry up. That’s right. I have to go” Mike continues to talk. John says, “No, I REALLY have to go.” Mike continues to talk and John starts doing the “Yak, Yak Yak” symbol thing with this hands hee hee ….. During Surf City John was doing 10 girls for every boy ……… During Mike’s usual (sort of long) intro to Be True To Your School, they were showing cheerleaders pics on the big screen. John had turned around and was looking at the girls. One came up from Iowa State University (they played in Des Moines the night before) and John stood up turned to the audience raised his arms and went “oh yeah !!!!!” I think John had a good time in Iowa hee hee ….. After that first 9 song run, Mike made a comment that the drummer was tired. John yelled “I am” hee hee … speaking of tired, he laid his head down on the congas during Pieces Brothers and rested. …. Seems like there was one more, but I can’t think of it.
3. John did appear to be having some drum (around the snare area) problem several times doing the show. He was messing with it between songs on several occasions.
4. There was a pink light that shown down on John often. It made him look bald with the long hair on the sides. I told my friend he would be mortified if he knew it looked like that.
Now the concert as a whole: I thought the sound mix was off (we were in the 2nd balcony so maybe that had something to do with it). It was extremely loud and very hard to hear the vocals over the instruments.
The set list was considerably different than any of the other probably 20-30 shows I’ve been too (granted it’s been a few years now). I probably didn’t know 1/3-1/2 of the songs where I was used to knowing all of them. I think they did close to all the Pet Sounds songs which the general Beach Boys fan don’t know (those “deep cuts”). They sang some I knew, but my friend didn’t know (like Disney Girls, Getcha Back, , Pieces Brothers, That Is That etc ). They sang Farmers Daughter and since Kansas is a farm state, I was hoping for Cottenfields, but nope. They sang Darlin (Jeff), I Can Hear Music (Eich) and Rhonda (Mike). So hard to hear others do John’s songs. I never heard any intro of John which of course I didn’t like but I screamed Cowsill as loud as I could after Cal. Dream. No girl came on stage during Barbara Ann to do the guitar thing that Scott normally does.
Yes they did talk of it being the 50th release date of Pet Sounds and sang Happy Birthday and brought out a cake for Brian Eichenberg.
I really didn’t feel the crowd was into the show. Not much clapping, head bobbing, dancing. Didn’t stand at all till the end of Fun, Fun, Fun (other encore was Barbara Ann) I think that was because they (meaning the crowd in general) didn’t know the songs.
The one part(s) that the audience seemed to respond to was the insert of sax and flute solos by Randy Leago (added to band about a month ago I THINK).
Both my friend and myself were unfamiliar with the campus so we were driving around early to find the auditorium. I saw some people walking so I rolled down the window and ask if they knew where the auditorium was. The pointed and then ask if we were going to the BB’s. I said yes, and they said “You girls look too young for the Beach Boys.” I say, “No, we’re not, but I’m only here for the drummer anyway.” LOL
