Thomas and Mary (Wommack) Jefferson



Thomas Jefferson was born November 25, 1792 in Sumter County, South Carolina, the son of John Jefferson and Lucy Andrews. On December 22, 1814, in Jones County, Georgia, he married Mary Wommack, who was born April 10, 1798 in Georgia.

To this union eight known children were born: 1. Sarah Maria Jefferson who married James Scott 2. Martha Elizabeth Jefferson who married Seneca H. Powell 3. Mary Amanda Jefferson married Robert Hamilton Scott 4. Thomas R Jefferson married Theresa ??? 5. Green Womack Jefferson married Harriet Hall 6. Walter Raleigh Jefferson married Nancy Caroline (Callie) McCorkle 7. Sicily Jefferson married John Glover 8. Elizabeth Ann Jefferson born September 24, 1833 and married David A. Tharp (Thomas was the brother of Elizabeth Jefferson Tharp -Mrs. Charnick A. Tharp - so when this couple's daughter married David A. Tharp, she was marrying her first cousin.)

Thomas was Justice of Jones County 1818 - 1821. Thomas started his military career as a Captain in the Georgia Militia, and later a major in the militia. Thomas was a trustee in incorporating Fortville Academy on December 9, 1822. Thomas bought land in Jones County (deed book K, p 109). Thomas Jefferson, Esq. of Jones County was a fortunate drawer in the Lottery of 1820, drawing land in Gwinnett County. Thomas sold his land in Jones County before moving to Alabama.

We know that Thomas and Mary left Jones County and relocated to Pleasant Hill, in Dallas County, Alabama in the 1820's. He later lived in Wilcox County, Alabama Here he served in the Alabama State Legislature. Sometime around 1849, he moved the family to DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. The rumor is that something happen and the whole community up and moved to Louisiana by caravan at the same time. Thomas Jefferson had a Stean Mill in the Frierson area in the years 1851-1855.

Thomas and Mary were both were baptized on September 7, 1834 and are listed as first members of the Evergreen Baptist Church in 1852 in Louisiana.

Thomas died May 22, 1855 and is buried in Kingston, Desoto Parish, Louisana. Mary died January 30, 1859 and is also buried in Kingston, Desoto Parish, Louisana. Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
