Joel Kelsey was born April 10, 1796 in Killingsworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut.

Diana Miles was born in 1795 in Milford, Connecticut the daughter of Daniel and Mary (Mallett) Miles. Diana’s death date is unknown.

Joel and Diana were married September 16, 1818 in Killingsworth, Middlesex, Connecticut. By 1820, they had moved to Hancock County, Georgia where they lived most of their lives.

To this union the following known children were born:
Charles born about 1820
A Daughter born about 1820
Julia born in 1826
Joel (or Joseph – census differences) born in 1840

Joel is listed on the census records as a machinist in 1850 and a bookkeeper in 1860.

Joel is listed as a member of the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church as follows:
