Bartholomew and Esther (Burt) Corwin
Bartholomew Corwin was born June 21, 1693 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. He probably left Massachusetts because of the persecution of his family by friends of those who had suffered in the witchcraft trials. He first went to Westerly, Rhode Island, and then in 1717 he settled in Hopewell, New Jersey, then in Hunterdon County. At that time Hunterdon County was only a wilderness but Bartholomew was a man of education and business ability and became one of Hopewell's most prominent citizens.
He was married to Esther Burt, daughter of John Burt "of England."
To this union six known children were born: 1. George, born July 12, 1718 2. Richard, born May 26, 1720, died as an infant 3. John, born February 26, 1722, died September 26, 1744 4. Joseph, born November 24, 1724, died May 25, 1805 5. William, born January 26, 1726, died as an infant 6. Samuel, born March 10, 1728, died 1776.
Bartholomew Corwin died May 9, 1747 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and is buried in an old cemetery on the farm of John S. Hunt about three miles west of Hopewell, New Jersey.
